Third Ace Attorney musical tells Edgeworth's story in January

While we wait in vain for news of an Ace Attorney Investigations 2 localization (we know, it's not going to happen), Japanese audiences can settle in for some new Edgeworth material, in the form of a third musical by the Takarazuka Revue.

Starting in January 13, the group's "Cosmos Troupe" will present "Prosecutor Miles Edgeworth: Ace Attorney 3," a new play starring Hiro Yumi as Miles Edgeworth. Yumi previously played Edgeworth in the previous two Phoenix Wright-focused productions.

The play fits with Capcom's "Single Content Multiple Usage" strategy. We hope to see this content used in games again soon. Ace Attorney 5 was announced earlier this year and hasn't been shown yet, and Level-5 is working on a Professor Layton/Ace Attorney crossover game.

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is unofficially fun

Image of Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is unofficially fun
With Madden NFL 13 launching in a few short weeks, I've been playing a few football games that often go under the radar due to a lack of official licensing. Namely, Backbreaker for Xbox 360 and Blitz: The League for the original Xbox have been occupying a ton of my free time, and for good reason; these games are fun.

Both games have flaws as well. Playbooks in both of these football games are somewhat narrow. Backbreaker doesn't have a ton of features, and the passing game is fairly difficult due to the camera's limited perspective. Blitz: The League has A.I. issues, as opposing teams often make questionable decisions, and are generally easy to beat with a strong quarterback. Even so, both games deliver big hits in a way that the Madden series could only dream of. Backbreaker's on-field camera magnifies the impact of player collision, and also makes juking and spinning around defenders in its Tackle Alley mode all the more satisfying. Blitz: The League's gritty bone-breaking action provides a different take on the sport altogether.

Both games highlight the apparent flexibility in creating an unlicensed sports game. While prospective stars sound eager to play for your school in NCAA 13, opposing pass-rush artists leave profanity-laden voicemails for your coach in Blitz: The League. Before EA Sports paid closer attention to the safety of players and the treatment of concussions on the digital field in Madden 12, Midway allowed players to pump their teammates full of banned performance-enhancing drugs. Real football exists somewhere in between the squeaky-clean image the NFL exudes in the Madden series and the cringe-inducing impact these unlicensed games provide.

Much like football games, last week's webcomics offer something for everyone to enjoy. I encourage you to check them out below, and then vote for your favorite after the break!

Minecraft mod makes shadows more shadowy, water more watery

What's that you say? You love Minecraft's neo-retro styling but wish it flexed more of your super-expensive gaming PC's copious muscle? Well, first of all, you need to speak up; it's very difficult to hear someone through the Internet. Secondly, Sonic Ether's Unbelievable Shaders mod for Minecraft is exactly what you're looking for.

As seen above, the mod adds dynamic shading effects as well as more realistic movement to vegetation and fire, and best of all, hyper-pretty transparent water cubes. While not yet fully optimized, the latest build of the mod is available here. Sonic Ether warns on his Facebook page that the mod is not bug free and should be used with caution. Conversely, older, more stable versions of the mod can be found here.

Master Chief surveys the Art of Halo 4 book cover

Image of Master Chief surveys the Art of Halo 4 book cover
Above, your eyes can gaze upon the cover of the upcoming Awakening: The Art of Halo 4 art book, featuring all sorts of concept art and designs from Microsoft's upcoming Halo 4. It's got everything you want in a Halo book cover, including Master Chief, some crazy epic Forerunner structure, and a trusty assault rifle.

Actually, that's not quite true; we could use at least a little Covenant. Is that a Covvie ship flying through the background? Unclear. You'll have to wait to get a better look when the book arrives on store shelves in November, along with the new game itself.

CD Projekt's multiplayer job listing is research-oriented

DICE 'committed' to Battlefield 3 even after Battlefield 4's launch

Skyrim's 1.7 patch headed to PS3 'in the coming weeks,' but Dawnguard is nowhere in sight

Don't fret, PlayStation 3 Skyrimmers, Bethesda says the game's 1.7 patch is heading to Sony's console "in the coming weeks." Bethesda acknowledged as much in a tweet yesterday afternoon. The game's 1.7 patch on PS3 includes the various updates from 1.6 (mounted combat, new kill cams, etc.), but it falls short of adding the still Xbox 360 exclusive Dawnguard DLC.

That DLC was issued a 30-day exclusivity period earlier this year ' a period which expires today, reports Kotaku ' but Bethesda's VP of marketing Pete Hines stated on Twitter, "We have not announced Dawnguard for any other platform, nor given a timeline for any such news. If we have news, I promise I'd tell you." He followed that up by saying, "I was simply stating that expecting/demanding something today is unfounded. Not that news is never coming," so it sounds like Dawnguard may yet head to other platforms.

We've reached out to Bethesda for further comment and will let you know if we hear back.

The quiet, solo side of Dead Space 3

Image of The quiet, solo side of Dead Space 3
Sitting in a brightly lit office above Times Square in the middle of the day made it easy not to be scared by Dead Space 3, even with bodies reanimating, spawning grotesque appendages, and chasing me down. Which isn't to say it isn't scary, just that my surroundings ' not to mention two other human beings ' rounded off the scary, sharp edges.

I didn't play co-op, and I wasn't outside on an ice planet. I piloted returning protagonist Isaac Clarke through much of what you'd expect from a Dead Space game: creepy, atmospheric spaceship corridors pocked with vile mutant humanoid creatures trying to eat my flesh. My mission was an optional side quest in Dead Space 3's flotilla section ' a mess of once operational ships now relegated to graveyard duty. But despite the level's original Dead Space feel, executive producer Steve Papoutsis tells me the demo wasn't intended as a response to the mixed fan reaction garnered from the third entry's action-focused E3 2012 reveal.

"Every time we show something new, we understand that when it isn't what we've done in the past, people are gonna have questions and wanna know what the meaning of it is or how it all fits together," he says. At E3, Dead Space 3's co-op was revealed in an action-heavy scene that some fans felt wasn't representative of the series' past entries. Papoutsis directly addresses that concern.

"We're well aware of making a Dead Space game, what it takes, and what we've done in the past. This is the fourth full Dead Space game we're making, and we have no intention of forgetting what we've done in the past," he says. "At E3, we were really looking to go out and show the world what's new."

In that sense, what I played is the more traditional, quiet part of Dead Space 3 ' the Felix to Dead Space 3's Oscar-like co-op. My mission was to listen to a story or gather something or other to get it to someone or other ' that's not important. What was important was that it felt just as isolated and lonely as past Dead Space entries. I strategically dismembered necromorphs, I solved some basic puzzles, and I panicked once or twice as a creature snuck up on me from behind.

It may just be some side missions, but there are at very least major parts of Dead Space 3 that are just as eerie as previous games. How much of the game that eeriness comprises, of course, remains to be seen.

Dead Space 3 launches on the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC in February 2013.

PSA: Rock Band iOS apps to be delisted on July 31

If you've considered picking up one of the Rock Band iOS games, now would be the time to do it. Come July 31, all Rock Band iOS apps, including Rock Band, Rock Band Reloaded and Rock Band Reloaded for iPad, will be delisted from the App Store. After this date, the games will be gone and users will no longer be able to purchase any DLC.

Earlier this year, Rock Band app users received a message saying that the app would be pulled on May 31. At the time, EA stated that the message had been "sent in error." There doesn't appear to be a mistake this time around, as the iTunes pages for each app confirm the delisting. The original error, apparently, was that the message was sent two months early.

Rumor: Assassin's Creed 3 getting a 'Season Pass'

Image of Rumor: Assassin's Creed 3 getting a 'Season Pass'
Those crafty Templars at Ubisoft are at it again, seemingly planning to subjugate the masses with a "season pass" for Assassin's Creed 3. A letter purportedly sent to GameStop employees both thanks them for their "hard work" in snapping up pre-orders of AC3 from customers, and, more importantly, warns them of an upcoming "season pass concept" for this October's game.

"We are currently in the process of creating a complementary development team that will begin working on post-launch episodic content to continue the Game of the Year experience that Assassin's Creed 3 will undoubtedly deliver," reads the letter. It's not exactly uncommon for Ubisoft to support its games post-launch, and the AC franchise is no exception ' each of the last three AC games, starting with AC2, were bolstered by post-launch content.

Precedents set by previous "season pass" offerings dictates that a variety of DLC (multiplayer, single-player, or both) would be packaged and sold ahead of its launch, giving the buyer an aggregate discount and locking them in to all of it. Ubisoft enacted such a scheme with the last AC title, Revelations, albeit only via PC. Still, Ubisoft has yet to confirm this letter or announce a "Season Pass" for AC3, nor has GameStop. And no, no DLC for Assassin's Creed 3 has been announced, outside of the ambiguous "special DLC" heading exclusively to PlayStation 3 players.

Silent Hill: Downpour studio Vatra Games 'under review' for closure, 'no decisions have yet been made'

Image of Silent Hill: Downpour studio Vatra Games 'under review' for closure, 'no decisions have yet been made'
Silent Hill: Downpour's Czech Republic-based developer Vatra Games is "under review," according to a statement from UK-based parent company Kuju Entertainment. The statement comes after a damning tweet from former 2K Czech employee David Semik stated, "Vatra Games RIP," though Kuju contends that "at this stage, no decisions have yet been made."

Vatra is said to be working on a non-Silent Hill game following this year's Downpour. Eurogamer Czech was told the project is akin to Darksiders or God of War-style action games. It's unclear if that project will continue, or how long Vatra has before hearing of its fate. Downpour received mixed reactions from critics. The studio's only other title thus far was Rush 'n Attack: Ex-Patriot; it was formed by several ex-2K Czech employees in 2009.

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is a kleptomaniac

I have a severe problem with stealing everything I can in video games. As part of my natural drive to satiate my escapist needs (as theft isn't a part of my daily routine), doing what I can to steal an item in nearly every video game possible is oddly relaxing to me.

Take The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening as an example. Regardless of the consequences, trying to save a few rupees by nabbing an item from the shopkeeper is the start of a behavior pattern I've recently begun noticing. I recall the first time I tried catching a trainer's Pokemon, or would meticulously check every crevice of an NPC's house in every Pokemon game in the series (when characters weren't home, I'd consider my actions as an additional crime, breaking and entering).

You could argue that such actions aren't entirely unethical. Sure, hacking any mmo like WoW to steal in-game currency, especially when that translates to real-world dollars, is a definite no-no. But in a case like Link's Awakening, when a game developer instills consequences for virtual petty theft, couldn't you consider the inclusion of theft an admission that stealing property is just another solution to a problem? Perhaps that's what I tell myself when I'm checking dresser drawers for items in an RPG.

However, stealing a glance at last week's webcomics isn't just allowed, it's encouraged. After doing so, you can vote for your favorite comic after the break.

3DS XL's screen reduces glare

Image of 3DS XL's screen reduces glare
Nintendo's 3DS XL system may have a size advantage over the original 3DS console, but it will also feature a LCD screen that is less reflective, according to a recent Iwata Asks interview. Takashi Murakami, who works in the mechanical design group for the console, said the reflectivity of the new LCD screen will be 3%, down from 12% on the 3DS.

"On a LCD screen there are basically three reflective layers, which all of them reflects and cause glare. So this time, we specially treated all the layers," Murakami said. Cutting down on glare for handheld systems has been a goal since the Game Boy Advance, which Nintendo President Satoru Iwata said had been abandoned most of the time due to cost.

It especially seems to be in Nintendo's interests to reduce the glare on a stereoscopic 3D system like the 3DS XL though, which was also said to offer a broader depth of 3D than its predecessor, as the system includes a larger depth slider.

MANOS: The Hands of Fate lands on iOS July 26

FreakZone Games will deliver retro adventure game MANOS: The Hands of Fate to iOS devices on July 26. Based on the awful 1966 cult movie of the same name, the game has players controlling Mike through locales inspired by the film, as well as settings from other movies.

According to FreakZone's site, "MANOS honours bad movies and games and borrows a lot of conventions from famous badness of the past, while at the same time bringing them all together to create something good." The game contains references to multiple films and games such as Castlevania II: Simon's Quest, along with Easter eggs dedicated specifically to Mystery Science Theater 3000.

The development team plans to release the NES-inspired game on Android devices, including the Kindle Fire, later this year.

Postcards from The Secret World: Riddles in the dark

Image of Postcards from The Secret World: Riddles in the dark
Welcome to Postcards from The Secret World, a trip through Funcom's new title from the perspective of a player new to MMOs. Read part one if you haven't!
My character stands outside a locked cell in the Kingsmouth sheriff's office, there to uncover the secrets behind a 2002 murder case. All I know is that something vital to the case's mystery is inside that cell. The cell, as it happens, belonged to Larry Checkon, the man allegedly responsible for a string of summer murders ' at least it did when he was alive.

My only clue was discovered inside the sheriff's computer, where I found a record of Checkon's actions after he was arrested. The sheriff had questioned him at the time, but Checkon kept quiet, telling the sheriff that she'd have to talk to his ghost if she wanted the truth. Somehow, this information is supposed to get me inside the cell and get me what I need.

The really weird part is that this isn't an adventure game, but rather an MMO: Funcom's The Secret World. It's this investigation mission ' and others like it ' that is fast becoming my new obsession.

As I've mentioned before, The Secret World certainly has its share of traditional "Go to X and kill Y number of baddies," and they're honestly just as tedious as they are in other MMOs and RPGs. Investigation missions, on the other hand, are something else entirely. Rather than confronting players with a gaggle of monsters, investigation missions offer up a series of puzzles.

Hearkening back to Funcom games like The Longest Journey (which shares The Secret World's lead designer, Ragnar Tornquist), the puzzles can be esoteric or even downright obtuse. The next step to getting into that cell, for instance? Suicide. In order to see Checkon's ghost (and thus find the truth), I had to become one myself. Shamefully, I have to admit that I looked up the answer to that one on the internet. In fairness, I actually did get into the cell while still alive at one point ' a glitch, which I didn't realize at the time ' so that threw me off track.

That's only the tip of the iceberg though, as other investigation missions had me tracking down clues from multiple sources ' even sources that exist outside of the game. Are you familiar with the work of painter Frans Hals? You'll need to acquaint yourself with it if you hope to crack the Kingsmouth Code. Other quest branches made cryptic references to Bible passages ' again, something I had to research online. There's even a built-in web browser in the game, though it's a bit on the slow side.

And, just like an adventure game, I've come across more than one red herring. Said Bible passage referenced King Solomon, which was a clue to the location of a hidden Illuminati site. There are several locations in Kingsmouth associated with the name Solomon, including a road and a bridge. Heck, the town of Kingsmouth is on Solomon Island. Here I was, running up and down roads, walking across and swimming under bridges, just trying to find something. In the end, it turned out that the clue referenced The Secret World's lore itself. Lore is picked up in bits and pieces and automatically added to a journal as you explore, and the Solomon I was looking for was buried in its pages.

This mixing of the real world and The Secret World doesn't stop there. Attempting to break my way into a laptop, I was given the password hint "my wife." The corpse of the laptop's owner, a member of an organization called the Orochi Group, was handily nearby, so I started my search there. All he had on him was a company ID ' a Mr. Kitsune Hayabusa ' but one detail caught my eye: his email address. It was registered to Orochi-Group.com, a URL with a real domain name, not a fake one obviously created for a video game. In a bit of mind-bending meta, I looked up the address in a web browser, which turned up a real website for the fictional Orochi Group. I don't know why an employee database would include the names of spouses, but I had my answer.

I haven't come across too many investigation missions, but they are already my favorite part of The Secret World. It's not often that an MMO ' or any game, for that matter ' really asks you to think, let alone one that asks you to do so outside of the game itself. And yet, here I am, intercepting transmissions and deciphering Morse code to complete a mission. I'll take more of that any day.

Next week I'll try to finally dive into multiplayer.

We first heard the name back in February when a trademark popped up for the phrase, but what exactly is it?

"Avatar Famestars is a new program from Microsoft Studios and is part of a select group of games that delivers new and exciting ways to play online with your friends and compete for social recognition," says Microsoft. Okay, what does that mean? A variety of in-game challenges (think: "get a perfect score five times on this game mode") are included in Avatar Famestar-supported games, and you'll earn rewards based on earning Famestar points (think: Avatar stuff).

Those rewards will cross from game to game, as will your point total. It's kind of like Ubisoft's UPlay program, but less ubiquitous ' for now, Avatar Famestars is locked to your Xbox 360, though we wouldn't be shocked to hear about it heading to Surface, Windows 8, and Windows Phones in due time.

Beyond Wreckateer, Microsoft's adding Avatar Famestar support to already released games Full House Poker, and A World of Keflings, and several upcoming games: Fire Pro Wrestling, Homerun Stars, and Avatar Motocross Madness. Unfortunately, it's not clear when any of the already available games will get the update, but we expect upcoming games will simply debut with the functionality. Wreckateer launches next Tuesday on Xbox Live Arcade, and it'll be the first game on Xbox with Avatar Famestar support. Keep an eye out for our review early next week.

NintendoWare Weekly: Kid Icarus Of Myths and Monsters, Petit Computer

Blizzard CEO on Diablo 3 problems, incoming improvements

Image of Blizzard CEO on Diablo 3 problems, incoming improvements
Blizzard CEO Mike Morhaime has taken to the Diablo forums to issue a statement on Diablo 3. In the statement, Morhaime addresses the game's launch, noting that it had both positive and negative elements. Blizzard, he admits, was not prepared for Diablo 3's staggering launch numbers ' to which players locked out during the initial server problems can attest.

Morhaime notes that Blizzard "looked at historical sales for Blizzard games and other top-selling PC games and watched preorder numbers" to the server requirements at launch, even going so far as to add further server capacity beyond its estimates. Still, says Morhaime, it wasn't enough, noting that "we've never gone from 0 to more than 6 million players across multiple continents within a few days with a brand-new game." He adds that Blizzard will strive to do better with future releases.

Regarding player reaction to Diablo 3, Morhaime states that Blizzard is working hard to improve the game on all fronts. That includes more varied items and improvements to the auction house, social features and character balance.

Concerning the auction house, Morhaime says the primary reason for it existence is to give players "peace of mind" when purchasing items that would otherwise come from unsecured third party services. Furthermore, Blizzard wanted to create a way for players to benefit from their extra loot. Still, Blizzard wants to make sure players "have a great experience with Diablo 3 without feeling like the auction house is mandatory, which was never our intention."

As for the need for a persistent online connection, Morhaime says that it's more than a simple measure to prevent piracy. "More important to us is that the online requirement is critical for the long-term integrity of the game experience." Specifically, he notes that the requirement is tied to persistent characters, social features, security and even customer service. Despite the online requirements "downsides" Morhaime says "this was the best long-term decision for the game."

Finally, Morhaime says Blizzard is working on a new gameplay system that will give high-level players "new goals to strive for" as opposed to the unsustainable "item hunt."

Head over to the Diablo forums for Morhaime's full statement.

EGLS to 'modify some parts' of its iOS MMO in wake of Torchlight asset theft accusations

Official Statement from EGLS Creator of Armed Heroes Online

In recent several days, there are lots of controversial discussions about Armed Heroes Online. We believe it should be necessary to introduce Armed Heroes Online to who may have never played the game so to help understand what kind of game it is before going further discussion.

Armed Heroes Online is exclusively oriented to iOS/Android mobile devices. Due to the performance gap between PC and mobile devices, assets from PC games do not go for mobile devices. We did great efforts to do each modeling, mapping, bone construction and action by our own on our self-developed 3D engine. Otherwise, we are unable to display each scene of Armed Heroes Online so great on mobile devices.

Besides, Armed Heroes Online is fully a MULTIPLAYER ONLINE game. The core gameplay is items farming based on energy system. Also players are provided with various other gameplays as complement including PVP melee combat, clan battle, guild war, tower defense style dungeons, avatar competition, etc. We devoted great efforts to realize smooth operations on phones/pads' touch screen, and to increase connections between players through in-game online chat/share/competition system. There, basically, the game core mechanism is largely different from PC console games. There is similarity between generic games since world view of game developers, and graphic style or compositions are easily influenced by other successful generic games. But what decides whether a game is of fun or not ultimately depends on many things mainly like its basic framework, gameplay and game control. Here we do hope people can at least trial run our game for once before giving comments, good or bad ones all welcomed.

We do note that the recent controversial discussions about Armed Heroes Online had brought harm to our company's reputation and worse got our players confused and upset, which is not what we expect to see. As a professional game developer, EGLS has been always dedicating our every effort to bring out better game experience for our players. Players always come first. There, we prefer to modify some parts of Armed Heroes Online where have caused those disputes rather than go on arguing. As long as this carves out a way out of angry disputes, it will be definitely worth our efforts.

At last, we want to make clear, if necessary, that we would like to submit the documents, files and other materials related to the game developing to Apple to prove the originalities of the game and the efforts we devoted into the game developing.

DICE vows continued support for Battlefield 3 in light of Battlefield 4 announcement

Image of DICE vows continued support for Battlefield 3 in light of Battlefield 4 announcement
EA officially revealed Battlefield 4 today as a project being developed at the company's Sweden-based DICE studio. Beyond that, however, no one's saying a peep about the game. Lest you forget, three more DLC packs are planned for DICE's last game, Battlefield 3, and that apparently means that DICE isn't ready to talk Battlefield 4 just yet.

"There is no further Battlefield 4 news at this point," reads a post from DICE on the Battlefield 4 subpage. "With the Back to Karkand and Close Quarters expansion packs already out, Armored Kill around the corner, and End Game and Aftermath still on the horizon, we're looking forward to many more hours of gameplay with you, and can't wait to see the stories you will tell through Battlelog and player created videos," it continues, appearing to ignore the fact that a new Battlefield game was announced this morning.

With Medal of Honor's 2010 reboot, EA set out to match its competition's annual shooter, Call of Duty. EA's Los Angeles-based Danger Close studio is in charge of EA's Medal of Honor franchise, apparently trading off years with DICE and the Battlefield franchise. The two franchises currently share DICE's Frostbite 2.0 game engine, and Danger Close's next MoH employs DICE's Battlelog system as well. Thus far, EA has yet to best Activision's Call of Duty powerhouse (in terms of sales and critical reception) with its two shooter franchises.

Double Fine Kickstarter backer rewards now shipping

Are you a proud (or otherwise) backer of the Double Fine Adventure Kickstarter project? If so, you could be in for some good news very soon, as the Kickstarter rewards have begun shipping, reports VG247.

Rewards range from T-shirts. posters and art books to lunch with Tim Shafer and Ron Gilbert themselves. Shipping time on that last one probably depends on how long it takes Double Fine to find a box large enough to house Tim, Ron and a reasonably sized table.

Tekken Tag Tournament 2 receiving 'over 100 swimsuits' as pre-order bonus

Bikini downloads in fighting games must be the "in" thing to do these days, because Tekken Tag Tournament 2 will be following in SoulCalibur 5 and Dead or Alive 5's footsteps, offering "over 100 swimsuits" in a "big bikini bundle," according to this "Tekken Bad Girls" trailer.

While the trailer frames the costumes as a pre-order bonus, Tekken godfather Katsuhiro Harada spoke of them as DLC during SDCC (according to Andriasang), which indicates that they may be made available to people who don't pre-order at some point in the future. Surprisingly, the bundle includes swimsuits for every character in the game, not just the ladies. And yes, that includes the animals.

I missed you guys.

But, like a Buffy cameo on Angel, our reunion is sadly not meant to last. Since current weekend editor Mike Suszek is drunk on a boat somewhere, I get to slip back into the ol' uniform and spend some time with my beloved weekend readers; sharing webcomics that hopefully bring a tiny little sliver of a smile to your empty, haunted faces.

So, how've you been? It's been a while. Is your dad still big into those model trains? I ran into your aunt at Central Market a couple weeks ago, she said things were going really well with you and your significant other. Do I hear wedding bells in your future?

Well, I'd probably better get going. Before I do, though, let's enjoy the best webcomics from last week and vote for our favorites after the break. Oh! And be sure to tell Barb and the kids that I said hi.

Rumor: Battlefield 4 outed by Medal of Honor: Warfighter pre-order promotion

As seen in the header image above, an Origin pre-order promotion for Medal of Honor: Warfighter briefly tempted customers with access to a Battlefield 4 beta before being removed from the public eye, according to neoGAF. Interesting, since Battlefield 4 doesn't really exist or anything yet, at least not in any sort of publicly official capacity.

While we didn't see the advertisement on Origin with our very own eyes, it was reportedly live and functional as a promotion, if lacking specific Battlefield 4 details, according to a corroborating report from IGN. It's possible that this was an accidental admission of BF4's existence, but it's also possible that someone at EA has learned an important lesson about letting the interns near Photoshop. We've got out ears to the ground and will update with any new information.

[Thanks, Steve!]

Borderlands 2: Shooting and slicing with Axton and Zero

Image of Borderlands 2: Shooting and slicing with Axton and Zero
Like the original Borderlands, there are four playable classes in Borderlands 2. Developer Gearbox has been forthcoming with the Gunzerker and Siren classes ' bringing them out at various trade shows and preview events ' but have kept quiet on the other two characters: Zero, the katana-wielding assassin and the new soldier, Axton.

After spending a sizable chunk of time with the other two characters, I wonder why they were ever hidden away in the first place. Zero and Axton in Borderlands 2 are responsible for some of the most stylish and exciting combat options I've seen in the game.

I was locked away for two hours with Borderlands 2 gameplay designer Randy Varnell, the sherpa on my journey. To give me a taste of more powerful skills, my characters were leveled to 25. Axton, "the accessible guy" Gearbox set up for shooter fans who may not be too familiar with RPGs, wasn't exotic enough for me; I wanted the ninja.

There were plenty of points available for me to spend to dig deep into Zero's three different skill trees. Zero's special skill deploys a hologram decoy before he disappears behind his fancy suit's cloaking feature. A timer counts down from ten seconds, and the longer you wait to attack ' either with shooting or melee ' the bigger the damage boost. And while in this cloaked state, enemy critical hit spots are highlighted for easy planning.

Oddly, Zero played a lot like Lilith from the original Borderlands. The similarity comes from this cloaking ability: it can be used as a panic button to quickly escape a desperate situation; it can be used as a straight-up offensive attack; it can be used as crowd control, to put a pack in disarray while your cohort(s) flank and go in for the kill. There's a lot of variety here, compounded by any other skills you dump points into, which add their own little folds and uniqueness to your character build that is the role-playing genre's richest reward.

Near the end of my time with Zero, I was wielding a pretty powerful shotgun and a devastating automatic pistol that had some serious reload and fire rates, compounded by fire damage for those unarmored bandits. And as Varnell supervised my session, offering sidebars and comments on my loot collection, the thing I came back to in my head was that he had described Zero as being a good sniper character. This was a suggestion I had completely disregarded.

That was perhaps the most surprising thing about my few hours with Borderlands 2, that in a matter of minutes experimenting with Zero's skills, I created an offensive powerhouse who could rush in unafraid and hold his own. He wasn't shoehorned into being a support-role character, and I not only made it work, I reveled in my success.

I found the same true when checking out Axton. While significant strides have been made to make his turret ' the main skill of the soldier class introduced with Roland in the first Borderlands ' as ridiculous as possible, his support and complementary skills offered the same opportunities to completely customize the character I wanted. But dat turret.

I couldn't help it. I made the turret as much of an offensive powerhouse as I could. Early on this meant improved fire rate and damage, ultimately graduating to additional barrels and a side pod that released volleys of missiles. Eventually Axton gets another turret, stacking all of the first turret's features.

But my favorite thing about Axton is the "Longbow" skill, which lets him stick the turret anywhere in the environment. This means on walls, ceilings, rocks, the tops of huts and all kinds of weird places. "Longbow" also gives Axton the ability to throw a turret really far ' if you're on a hilltop and see a group of Skags far below, you can deploy the turret right into the thick of the den and watch it go to work.

That's a lot of what makes the Borderlands experience so unique: gaming the system and taking skills to extreme plateaus. Getting access to those final two characters have shown what possibilities I'll have when mixing and matching them with friends. What if myself and three friends all used Axton and threw down eight turrets during a boss fight? Would it work? How quickly would we destroy the beast? I really want to discover the answer.

Iwata: 3DS XL to be sold at a profit, 3D likely a 'minor element' in future Nintendo devices

D3 Publisher reveals Earth Defense Forces 4 with Japanese teaser page

You remember those three previous Earth Defense Forces games where you shot at giant bugs with a huge arsenal of weapons? It looks like D3 Publisher is fixing on another round of bug destruction, as the Japanese publisher revealed a teaser site for a fourth entry in the series.

Twitter user @Wario64 spotted the page, though little information beyond a game logo and a cheeky slogan are available thus far. Is it heading to North America and Europe? What platforms is it for? When will it arrive? We're not sure just yet, but those are all fantastic questions (which we've put to D3). If you asked us what to expect from another EDF game, though, well ... bigger, prettier bugs, and uh ... more guns? Sure, let's go with that.

Halo 4 will work with Microsoft's new tablet ... somehow

Image of Halo 4 will work with Microsoft's new tablet ... somehow
Microsoft president of interactive entertainment business Don Mattrick says Halo 4 will interact with Microsoft's upcoming tablet computer, Surface. Exactly how the two will interact, however, remains a mystery. Mattrick noted the news during a VentureBeat event in San Francisco yesterday; later, he reconfirmed the functionality with a reporter on-hand but refused to give any more details.

If we had to guess, though, we'd say the only functionality between the two will be the already announced SmartGlass stuff from E3 (say, using Halo Waypoint, or viewing the game's encyclopedia). After all, Microsoft told us at E3 that SmartGlass would be part of all Microsoft Studios games going forward after its fall 2012 launch.

Of course, Microsoft could always go totally off the rails and add full-on gamepad support via Surface's touchscreen. Or maybe just a personal Cortana app where she freaks out and yells at you randomly while you're playing. Maybe they should just stick with the Waypoint stuff, actually.

Myst gets Real on iPad

Image of Myst gets Real on iPad
realMyst for iPad Now Available
Cyan Worlds announces the immediate availability of realMyst, the real-time iPad version of the blockbuster game Myst.

Myst Island
This is not your father's Myst," said Rand Miller, founder of Cyan Worlds. "To explore the islands and Ages of Myst in realtime... it's an amazing feeling... This is a must have App.
Spokane, WA. (PRWEB) June 14, 2012

Cyan Worlds announces the immediate availability of realMyst for the iPad 2 and the new iPad. realMyst - the realtime 3D version of Myst, joins the original Myst and Riven: the Sequel to Myst which are also available for iOS. realMyst delivers the rich story and gameplay of the original Myst in a visually and aurally stunning, dynamic, realtime 3D experience for the iPad 2 and the new iPad.
Myst was originally released in 1993 to both critical and popular acclaim. Its storyline, environments, graphics, music, and interface created an award winning experience that made it the best selling game of the last millennium and an App store favorite. realMyst shakes that original adventure forward - updating the journey to a state-of-the-art experience. The realtime 3D environment allows for complete freedom of motion and viewing - with seamless movement from place to place. The elegant touch control provides an almost invisible connection to the worlds of Myst.
"This is not your father's Myst," said Rand Miller, founder of Cyan Worlds. "To explore the islands and Ages of Myst in realtime... it's an amazing feeling. So much went into creating this experience - years of development, almost a gigabyte of textures, models, sounds, music, and video. This is a must-have App."
The ease of the realMyst interface belies the challenge that Cyan faced of creating a simple and elegant way for players to explore a 3D environment on a touchscreen device. "Instead of trying to awkwardly shoehorn a computer mouse interface or game console controller into the new touch environment - we were driven to design a simple touch interface that anyone could use." said Karl Johnson, Producer on the project. "The resulting interface allows the player to explore a 3D world with the ease of 'exploring' a 2D document on the iPad."
The realtime version also makes possible visual enhancements such as rippling water, waving branches, falling rain, moving clouds, and more. And the audio also benefits from realtime with sounds that emanate from specific locations and react realistically as the player explores. The addition of a new Rime Age provides a reward for completing the journey.
In celebration of the 19th anniversary of Myst, realMyst is being launched at a special price of $6.99US. It is available immediately for the iPad 2 and the new iPad on the iTunes App Store. For owners of other iOS devices the original Myst is available on the App Store for $4.99US.
About Cyan Worlds:
Cyan Worlds is an entertainment company located in Spokane, Washington. They are best known for Myst, Riven, and Myst Online: Uru. They got their start in 1987 with the whimsical worlds for children - The Manhole. They currently focus on mobile apps of all sizes (including realMyst, Myst, Riven, Stoneship, Bug Chucker, and The Manhole) and run the Myst Online server on a donation basis.

The Walking Dead FPS's Comic-Con swag is all ears

Image of The Walking Dead FPS's Comic-Con swag is all ears
Like, literally. As in, "Here's a necklace of zombie ears," which might be a bit less disgusting if it weren't a necklace of human ears. San Diego Comic-Con attendees can snag the gruesome jewelry by rushing over to Activision's booth and (ugh) pre-ordering the upcoming Terminal Reality-developed Walking Dead FPS.

Only the first 100 on-site pre-orders get the "extremely limited edition version of Daryl's 'walker ears' necklace," so, uh, don't rush if you don't want the super creepy necklace. We're kinda leaning toward that option, actually.

The Walking Dead first-person shooter is getting its first big showing at SDCC 2012, but it won't be playable. Take a look at the 2013 title in a new trailer below the break.

Lovely, synthetic tunes from Krater now available

Image of Lovely, synthetic tunes from Krater now available

If you haven't played Fatshark's Krater yet, you've missed out on its synth-heavy, John Carpenter-esque soundtrack. That's okay though, because the soundtrack is now available for all to enjoy. Wll, technically it's a score that was written for a film that was never made. The actual Krater game soundtrack will be made available at a later date. It's ... kind of confusing. Watch the video.

Confusion aside, if you like the music, you can nab it for $11 on iTunes or pick up a boxed edition, which includes both the soundtrack and a copy of Krater, from the Fatshark store. You'll also find the soundtrack on Spotify.

I'm addicted to NCAA Football 13's Dynasty mode. Granted, you'll hear all about it when our review of the game goes up early next week, but something occurred to me while I was indulging in the game's fairly deep recruiting process: I love side quests and meta-games.

While the root of NCAA 13 is the game's on-field football action, players are destined to spend more time meticulously building a star-studded roster of young talent for their school in Dynasty mode. Playing "GM" in sports games can be a fun, strategic time sink, but finding joy outside of a game's primary source of action isn't limited to this genre.

In fact, when I think back to my time spent in my favorite PlayStation RPGs, Final Fantasy VII/VIII and Star Ocean: The Second Story, I recall my favorite moments in racing chocobos, engaging in card game battles and combining materials to make weapons. The argument can be made that any single game isn't necessarily based around one type of play mechanic.

This also means that as video games continue to evolve, facets of each one could click with players in an exciting and varying way, making it less realistic for players to expect their peers to experience games the same way they do. Since not every artist creates their work for the same "purposes" then, we encourage you to check out last week's batch of webcomics to find what you connect with and vote for your favorite after the break!
