Hero Academy coming to Steam this August

Image of Hero Academy coming to Steam this August
Robot Entertainment announces hero academyTM is coming to steam
Steam version to include exclusive playable Team Fortress 2TM team and unlockables
PLANO, Texas ' June 29, 2012 ' Robot Entertainment has announced that their critically acclaimed mobile strategy game, Hero Academy, is coming to Steam on August 8, 2012. Players who purchase the game on Steam will unlock an exclusive new heroic team featuring the mercenaries from Valve Corporation's wildly popular Team Fortress 2. Additionally, each heroic expansion team purchased in Hero Academy on Steam will unlock a unique item in Team Fortress 2.

Blending classic tactics gaming with the fast-paced action of modern casual titles, Hero Academy delivers tense one-on-one battles with quick bursts of gameplay. The balance of power can shift in a single turn, and victory requires a carefully crafted strategy. Deploy different character classes, defend your turf with countermeasures, and with the placement of a few special items, you'll conquer your opponent.

"Working with Valve on this major franchise and bringing their popular characters into our world is groundbreaking in the world of gaming. It marks the first time we've seen a major crossover of characters from the PC to mobile devices and from the first-person shooter genre to turned-based strategy," said Robot Entertainment CEO Patrick Hudson. "It's a great testament to Valve as a visionary partner and their passion for giving gamers what they want."

Watch the new teaser trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vcCUDsMdpYc

Hero Academy is asynchronous, so a player may battle friends across multiple simultaneous games on iOS or Steam, whenever they have a few moments of free time. Select your moves from a range of options, like advancing across the playing field, attacking, defending, or adding powerful items to the fray. Once you're satisfied with your five moves, submit your turn or add an animated taunt. The game's built-in chat system lets you talk smack or simply stay in touch with friends. The first player to destroy their opponent's crystals is declared the winner, but a range of strategies ensure that no two games are alike. The game launches on PC with two unique teams included, each with a variety of playable units. More heroic teams, avatars and add-ons are available via in-game purchase. Teams purchased in either the iOS or the Steam version of Hero Academy will work on all platforms.

Hero Academy Features:
· Cross-Platform Multiplayer Gaming ' Challenge friends on Steam or iOS to asynchronous one-on-one battles via online multiplayer. Play a heated bout in twenty minutes or across a full day, whenever you have a few moments. Play all of your Hero Academy matches at your desk, on your iPad, or on the go with your iPhone!
· Exclusive TF2 team ' The Steam version of Hero Academy includes the Council starter team and an exclusive new team featuring characters, upgrades, and abilities from Team Fortress 2! You can only unlock this team via Steam, but once unlocked you can use them anywhere that you play Hero Academy.
· Team Fortress 2 unlockable items ' Each expansion team purchased in Hero Academy on Steam will unlock a unique cosmetic item in Team Fortress 2.
· Quick to Learn ' Casual players can attack without mercy, while tactics game buffs will love the strategic cat-and-mouse gameplay

Hero Academy is an asynchronous multiplayer tactics game from Robot Entertainment that can be played on iOS and Steam. Featuring humorous fantasy visuals, Hero Academy is a mix of classic strategy and fast-paced casual gaming and has something for every player. Let's look really closely at Nintendo's Wii U

Image of Let's look really closely at Nintendo's Wii U

Nintendo showed dozens of games during E3 2012, and gave attendees a second hands-on with near-final Wii U hardware. We covered the company extensively, but we couldn't resist an invitation to get a quiet, private demonstration of the console during a New York City event this week.

What's more, Nintendo was showing off more than just the WiiPad (what we're calling the Wii U's tablet controller) ' a Nintendo rep gave us a thorough look at the console itself. As she points out in the video, neither the Wii U console nor the WiiPad are final hardware, so if you see some funky looking metal sticking out from the back of the system, know that it won't be there when the units arrive at your local brick-and-mortar.

We also got a chance to check out the Wii U Pro Controller (otherwise known as "the Nintendo-born child of the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 controllers"), and to see how it works with the gorgeous Rayman Legends. Normally, one player mans the WiiPad while the other navigates with the Pro Controller, but somebody had to hold the microphone, so the rep was forced to do both himself. If it looks awkward, blame us, not the Wii U.

Anyway, if you were looking for an opportunity to marvel at just how long the Wii U console is, here's your chance.

How to cut to Mass Effect 3's 'Extended Cut' even sooner

Image of How to cut to Mass Effect 3's 'Extended Cut' even sooner
While BioWare said that loading a save file that places Commander Shepard roughly two missions before the actual ending of Mass Effect 3 is necessary to experience the Extended Cut downloadable content, players can view the new ending of the game even more quickly.

To cut out the middleman (and potentially any fresh content included in the missions prior to the end of the game), players who have completed the game can load up an auto-save that zips Shepard to the end of the game, labeled (spoilers!) "Citadel: The Return." Again, while you might miss added scenes during the final missions in the game, you'll go straight to all the explanatory stuff at the end.

It's worth noting that we performed this act of trickery on Xbox 360, so we can't confirm that this works on PS3 or PC just yet.

James Mielke leaves Q? Entertainment to join Q-Games

MielkeSeemingly in an effort to have the most confusing career path possible, former Electronic Gaming Monthly editor in chief James Mielke has left his post as a producer at Q? Entertainment (where he headed development of the excellent Lumines Electronic Symphony) and joined Q-Games , thus making those two companies even easier to mix up.

"To be clear, Q and I are parting company on the best of terms," Mielke told CVG, referring to Q? Entertainment. "For a lot of reasons I won't bore you with the time felt right to shift gears and move forward."

If his first project at Q-Games is called "Pixeljunk Luminous" or is a Pixeljunk Eden spinoff for children, we quit.

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is fully kick-started

Image of Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is fully kick-started
By now, everyone knows what Kickstarter is. Crowd-funded video games are all the rage nowadays, and unsurprisingly, I've found that some gamers are sick of reading about them.

Let's take a moment to appreciate just how wonderful crowd-funded gaming is. When indie developers take to Kickstarter to fund their projects, the relationship between the consumer and producer is a personal one. Players can pay up-front for developers to create expressive content free from any potential ties a publisher could bestow on said creators. A crowd-funded game creates a clear path of communication between producers and players, cutting out the middle-man.

Better yet, funding projects also shines a spotlight on individual designers. The intimate feeling of the crowd-funded indie scene results in talented developers being rewarded for their work. Personally, I'd rather know an artist by name than shake my fist at a monolithic company. There are some amazing video game projects in the crowd-funding space right now, and many could be considered "risky" by the industry's standards. Supporting the crowd-funding initiative might be just as important as supporting the games themselves.

I encourage you to support our featured webcomic artists by checking out last week's comics and voting for your favorite after the break!

NHL 13 to feature Flyers' Giroux on cover

Image of NHL 13 to feature Flyers' Giroux on cover
Claude Giroux was declared the winner of the NHL 13 cover vote, and was announced as the game's featured cover athlete earlier this week by EA Sports. The Philadelphia Flyers forward beat Nashville Predators goalie Pekka Rinne to win the cover tournament.

This was the first cover vote for the NHL series, which EA Sports said resulted in over 26 million votes. Unlike the Madden cover votes in the past, tournament voting was hosted directly on the league's website, underscoring the sense of value both the NHL and players have for the opportunity to grace the cover of the game.

NHL 13 will launch September 11 in North America for Xbox 360 and PS3, and September 14 in Europe.

You know you want these Castle Crashers LEGOs to exist

Image of You know you want these Castle Crashers LEGOs to exist
Castle Crashers is essentially a virtual personification of the make-believe adventures we'd take our medieval-themed LEGO kits on as wee children, lo those many years ago, so we're all about the idea of actual Castle Crashers LEGOs being put into production.

So is LEGO Cuusoo user Czar, whose Castle Crashers prototype set (seen above) is doing its damnedest to gain traction over on the crowdsourcing service. If made, the kit would come with four knights, two barbarians, a forest set piece and the War Machine mini-boss. Anyone interested in proclaiming their interest in such a product can do so here. Hopefully Castle Crashers will be seen as more of a LEGO-friendly brand than Firefly was.

[Thanks, Shaun!]

Santa Seaman's implications cannot be fully ascertained

Yup, that's a Santa Seaman all right, and we're just as desperately curious to find out why it exists as you are. The weird thing was tweeted by Seaman creator Yoot Saito, who also said that it was time to begin thinking about the end of the year, according to Andriasang's translation.

We have so many questions. Is Saito hinting at some kind of holiday announcement, or even better, some kind of holiday release? Do kids these days even remember Seaman? Is this related to that Nikkei report? Was this whole post just an excuse to publish that picture of Santa Seaman?

Answers, in order: We hope, probably not, maybe, and definitely.

Fez patch released, absolutely do not play it

Image of Fez patch released, absolutely do not play it
The long-awaited patch for Fez has finally arrived, though you may want to hold the fanfare. While the patch does fix a number of glitches and prevents a lot of exploits and problematic "infinite death loops" (eek!), it also introduces a "fairly widespread" new problem, according to Polytron. Specifically, "the save file can be seen as corrupted by the game after installing the patch."

Clearing the Xbox 360 cache "should resolve the issue." If that doesn't work, however, "there is no known workaround." In other words, you probably shouldn't play Fez until Polytron patches the patch.

XSEED lets loose Unchained Blades on PSP next week

XSEED Games Bringing Artistic RPG, Unchained Blades, to PSP®(PlayStation®Portable) system on June 26

Dungeon-Crawling RPG Adventure Prepares for Release on PlayStation®Network, Launches New Website

Torrance, Calif., (June 19, 2012) ' XSEED Games, an independent-minded publisher, is pleased to announce today that the dungeon-crawling RPG title, Unchained Blades, will be released in North America on June 26 for the PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) system as a digital download title on PlayStation®Network at a price of $29.99. A Nintendo 3DS version will follow later in the year.

Released in Japan as UnchainBlades ReXX and developed by FuRyu, Unchained Blades is a role-playing game that utilizes a first-person perspective and is set in a monster-filled world. The game was directed by Toshio Akashi of the Lunar series, while the game's story was penned by Grandia series veteran Takashi Hino.

Unchained Blades follows the story of the vengeful dragon emperor named Fang. After being stripped of his powers by the goddess Clunea, Fang embarks on a journey for revenge, hoping to regain his true form. Along the way, Fang is joined on his quest by a cowardly golem prince, a shy medusa priestess, a young phoenix clan maiden, and many other mythical beings seeking to meet with the goddess.

Boasting a veritable who's who of famous Japanese artists, Unchained Blades represents a collaboration between some of the best talent in the industry. The main character Fang was designed by Pako, most famous for his work on the Shining Force series, while other characters were fashioned by artists such as Toshiyuki Kubooka (Lunar), Shinichiro Otsuka (Summon Night), and Kazushi Hagiwara (Bastard!!), to name a few.

In Unchained Blades, players journey through the game with a party of up to four characters, moving through dungeons in a first-person perspective and engaging in turn-based combat along the way. The game features a unique "Unchain" system, which enables players to try and convince monsters to follow them and help them on their quest. If an enemy monster is successfully "Unchained," that monster will then join the player's party and help them in the future by blocking attacks or supplying players with special offensive abilities. Each character in the player's four person party can hold up to four "unchained" creatures, ensuring plenty of combat variety. The game has also been completely redubbed with new English voice-overs and boasts over 60 hours of gameplay.

Developed by FuRyu and published by XSEED Games in North America, Unchained Blades will release as a digital download on the PSP system on June 26, and Nintendo 3DS later in 2012. For more information, check out the game's all-new website at www.unchainedblades.com

'Steam for Schools' is a free version of Steam for students, facilitates Portal 2-based lessons

Image of 'Steam for Schools' is a free version of Steam for students, facilitates Portal 2-based lessons
"Steam for Schools" is Valve's next push into edutainment. This summer, educators can apply for beta inclusion in the program, which includes a "limited version of Steam" featuring Portal 2, the game's level editor, and its workshop for hosting and organizing user-created levels. This new version of Steam will be free for educators (in and out of beta), and will give educators administrator access ' meaning that kids cannot share levels.

The Washington-based company intends on opening up that level of access in the future, but Valve's Leslie Redd told attendees of today's Games for Change festival that "children need that walled garden." In the future, Valve hopes to allow more openness.

Valve isn't receiving any outside funding or grants for the program. "Valve is a commercially successful company," Redd explained with a smile. Of course, facilitating a massive education program for free is pretty great public relations. Other publishers aren't involved just yet, but Redd said there've been some initial talks.

For more information, Valve's "Teach with Portals" website is now open and will expand in the coming months.

Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor review: Grasping at nothing

Image of Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor review: Grasping at nothing
With my upper body poking through the hatch of my vertical tank ' essentially a massive gun turret situated atop two equally massive, birdlike metal legs ' I observe the surrounding landscape with a pair of binoculars. Spotting my target, I hop back into the cockpit of the VT as one of my crew members begins to crank the engine. I pull the activation lever, sending power to the VT's numerous systems: instrument panels, ammunition gauges and, most importantly, armaments and steering.

I lean into the viewport, watching through the tiny window as the VT rumbles forward and my remote target grows closer. Once we're within range, I pull down the periscope, which will lend much greater accuracy than the viewport's iron sights at this distance. Adjusting my aim slightly above the target, I let loose a shell. The armor-piercing round impacts the enemy VT's leg with such force that it is shorn clean off, sending the tank tumbling to the ground. I silently congratulate myself, but the celebration is cut short when an enemy shell comes screaming out of nowhere, slamming into our VT and knocking me back into my seat.

As my team and I regroup, a second shell rocks the cabin once more, shattering the viewport glass and filling the cockpit with smoke. The panel that houses the ventilator control is tucked away to the right. I pull it forward, lock it into place, reach for the ventilator chain and ... accidentally flick on the headlights. On my second attempt, instead of pulling the ventilator chain, I put the entire control panel away again. I pull the panel out again, reach for the ventilator chain and put the control panel away again. I pull the panel out a third time and reach very, very carefully for the ventilator chain ... at which point my entire crew dies of smoke inhalation.

The technology behind the Kinect is capable of enabling incredible fantasies, and it has allowed me to interact with virtual worlds in ways I never thought possible. What Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor has taught me is that, should that technology fail just once, the entire fantasy comes crashing down in an instant.

The year is 2082 and the world is a frightening place. In the early part of the 21st century, some sort of electric apocalypse rendered all of our precious technology useless. The globe is now ruled by the iron fist of a Chinese-run United Nations, and America is embroiled in a seemingly endless war. Somewhat paradoxically, the death of technology has given rise to new, more advanced technology, though all of it looks as though it were designed in the 1940s. The most advanced of this retro-themed tech is the Vertical Tank, known also as the VT or just "veet."

As the almost entirely silent protagonist Sergeant Winfield (Winfield?) Powers, America's top VT pilot, it's your job to take the fight to the UN ' colloquially known as "Uncle" ' and free the world from its tyranny. The campaign sees Powers and his platoon blasting its way through New York, Africa, Russia and, ultimately, Berlin. Along the way, Powers and company uncover Uncle's top secret project: unbelievably powerful Heavy Vertical Tanks (HVTs) that threaten to end the war in one fell, brutal swoop.

All of this serves primarily as window dressing for Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor's main event: the realistic simulation of actually piloting a walking tank entirely from a first-person perspective. The controller offers basic movement and weapons controls, allowing Powers to maneuver and take out enemy forces. Heavy Armor isn't content, however, to let you just point at bogeys and fire away. You'll also have to deal with the realities of being cooped up with three other people in a lumbering iron box as it slowly marches across the battlefield. And it is slow ' each step of the VT is replete with real weight and significance, and course corrections generally require a full stop.

This small detail is just one of many. Using the Kinect, you command a wide array of instruments, from the aforementioned periscope, viewport and ventilator to ammo selectors, a communications monitor and more. Should an enemy pierce your VT's armor and kill one of your crew members, you may even find yourself in the unenviable position of having to manually reload weapons.

These actions are accomplished through an appropriate physical movement using the Kinect. To use an item, you have simply to reach for its rough area on-screen. Once it is "selected," the right gesture will activate the proper device. Pushing both hands forward will cause Powers to lean into the viewport, giving a clear view of the battlefield and basic aiming via the iron sights. Reach out and "press" one of a pair of buttons on the viewport, and he will arm either armor-piercing or high-explosive rounds. Raise a hand skyward and he will pull down the periscope.

When the [Kinect] tech fails ... it fails in such a fundamental way that it's impossible to ignore.

As I mentioned, the pacing is slow, despite however hectic the battle may become outside. Rounds of ammunition take several seconds to load, meaning every shot has to count. Miss, and you're only giving enemies an opportunity for a free counterattack as your team scrambles to reload. Hit, and you're rewarded ' the rare one-shot-kill on a VT, or vaporizing an entire squadron of Uncle soldiers.

While the slow, methodical combat may add a sense of realism to the proceedings, the Kinect's shortcomings also make it feel necessary. Using nothing but gestures, it takes a long time to 1) pull away from the periscope, 2) pull out a control panel, 3) activate the ventilator, 4) put the panel away and 5) pull down the periscope again. When everything is running smoothly, the deliberate actions can be deeply rewarding. It feels great to take out an enemy transport with a high-explosive round, retreat to cover and smack the armor-piercing ammo button on the console, finally swinging back into action to destroy an approaching VT.

But the second that Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor fails to execute the action you intended, the entire experience breaks down. The scenario described in my introduction, in which Powers and company die of smoke inhalation, isn't a fabrication. Numerous times I found myself desperately trying to vent the cockpit of smoke, only to idiotically swing the ventilator control panel into and out of place or activate the headlights instead. The ammo selector buttons are equally finicky and are made even more maddening when you can actually see Powers' hand floating over the correct button, only to watch it whack the wrong one.

Another frustration: selections become very "sticky" once Heavy Armor thinks you've made up your mind. So, after you've "grabbed" the handle on the viewport shutter, it's very hard to let go without closing it first. On the other end of the spectrum, sometimes one gesture can be mistaken for another. For example, when I raise my hand to open the shutter I've accidentally closed, I might activate the periscope instead. Keep in mind that, for every second lost to fumbling with some internal mechanism, your VT is being pummeled by computer-controlled enemies that are not equally encumbered. As you desperately flail, the enemy will kill you with no compunction, sending you back to the beginning of the mission or one of Heavy Armor's few checkpoints.

For the record, I abided by the instructions, setting up my play space between 6 and 10 feet in front of my television. Some levels played flawlessly, while others were subject to all the problems I've mentioned here. It's a shame, because the technical issues manage to overshadow every other aspect of Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor. A few of the better moments ' saving a crew member from a knife attack, tossing a live grenade from the cockpit, the joy of blowing off a VT's leg ' are lost to every accidental pull, press, activation and undeserved death.

"You are the controller" is Microsoft's tagline for the Kinect, but there's also a second, secret tagline that the company never intended. If you own a Kinect, you may have articulated it yourself: "It's great, when it works." Whenever the recognition is working, Kinect really does enhance the experience of Steel Battalion, enabling the fantasy of piloting a very real walking tank and delivering a thrill of satisfaction with every confirmed kill. When the tech fails, however, at least in my experience, it fails in such a fundamental way that it's impossible to ignore.

There are worthwhile ideas in Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor, and those hoping to glimpse the possibilities of Kinect should definitely try it, but I can't in good conscience wholly recommend it.

This review is based on a retail copy of Steel Battalion: Heavy Armor, provided by Capcom.

Joystiq's review scores are based on a scale of whether the game in question is worth your time -- a five-star being a definitive "yes," and a one-star being a definitive "no." Read here for more information on our ratings guidelines.

"These are important reforms over 10 years in the making," Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare said, as reported by News.com.au. "The R18+ category will inform consumers, parents and retailers about which games are not suitable for minors to play and will prevent minors from purchasing unsuitable material."

The classification law now puts games on equal footing as movies and other media forms.

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is catching 'em all over again

Image of Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is catching 'em all over again
Earlier this week, I battled an 8-year-old relative in a game of Pokemon Black using our Nintendo DS systems. To say the least, he's a big fan of Pokemon; he owns a binder full of trading cards and a room adorned with posters. He's nearly completed the Platinum, HeartGold and Black iterations of the treasured series.

You can imagine the excitement and wonder in his eyes when I explained how far back the Pokemon series spans. I even found myself falling into a nostalgic lull while talking about my time with Pokemon Red, and how "there's nothing like the original 151." After informing him that Pokemon Black and White 2 are due next in the series, his remark was, "So... did they pretty much run out of ideas?"

While he's a smart kid, it's easy to forget how perceptive all young players can be. Even though he loves the series in the same way I did years ago (he draws his own Pokemon creations), he noticed that each subsequent game feels like a lot like the last one. He also bashed "ace trainers" in the games, and wondered "how they can even think their bad Pokemon will win." I hadn't even wondered that myself.

While I work on devising a way to actually beat him in a game of Pokemon, I invite you to catch all of last week's webcomics, and then vote for your favorite after the break.

Image of Riot Games registers URL for 'Supremacy'

League of Legends developer Riot Games was caught with its hands in the domain name cookie jar this week when it registered the URL supremacy.com, WhoIs records revealed.

Companies will often use means of privately registering domain names related to as-yet-announced projects, making confirmation of upcoming projects difficult. So while URLs such as leagueoflegendssupremacy.com and its variations are listed as owned by private domain companies, supremacy.com is now registered to Riot Games.

Riot Games recently dealt with security breaches on EU League of Legends accounts, though billing information on accounts went untouched.

Rumor: 'Xbox 720' doc spills details on Kinect 2, 2013 launch, AR glasses

Image of Rumor: 'Xbox 720' doc spills details on Kinect 2, 2013 launch, AR glasses
A lengthy business document purportedly sourced back to Microsoft showed up on Scribd yesterday. In it, alleged details about an "Xbox 720." For starters, the 56-page document claims the next-generation Xbox will launch in 2013 for $299, alongside the "Kinect V2." The doc also claims it'll come packed with Blu-ray functionality and be able to play game that are "4x - 6x" better looking than Xbox 360. If only it could promise the game themselves would be 4x - 6x better!

Beyond the stuff you'd expect, the document also claims Microsoft has Augmented Reality glasses in the works named "Fortaleza" (presumably built at Brazil-based Innovation Center Fortaleza) ' the document says we won't see through MS' AR until some time in 2014, post-console launch. Additionally, it claims the "Xbox 720" will have some form of "always on" functionality, as well as the ability to run apps at the same time (read: multitasking).

Now before you go getting all excited, you should probably know that this document surfaced in some form back in early May on Nukezilla. Moreover, even if it's totally legit, the document itself appears to be rather old ' dating back to August 2010 at least. That said, some of the info detailed in the document has since been announced by Microsoft (most notably Smart Glass). We've seen some pretty thorough fakes in our time, but this would be the most thorough if it were.

We've reached out to Microsoft for comment, but, well, you know.

[Thanks to everyone who sent this in!]

Microsoft and Sony are trying to lock down .Xbox and .PlayStation, respectively

Image of Microsoft and Sony are trying to lock down .Xbox and .PlayStation, respectively
On the Future Internet', silly abbreviations like ".com" and ".edu" will cease to exist. Instead. megacorporations will take over with top-level domain names like ".xbox," .sony," or ".nabiscosnackwellsdietdevilsfoodcookies." The transition began this week, as The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) showed in its list of corporations applying for ultra-specific top-level domains.

The list has both the aforementioned Microsoft and Sony applications for .xbox and .playstation (respectively), as well as ones for ".live," ".bing," ".skype," and ".windows," while Sony applied for ".sony," and ".xperia." Microsoft put up $2.035 million for its 11 name bids, and Sony put up $555K, according to New Statesman.

Bidding for personalized (er ... company-ized) URL abbreviations costs a minimum of $185K (just for "evaluation"), so those diabolical plans to squat on ".sexytimes" might be more expensive than you planned. Additionally, when multiple bidders are involved, ICANN assesses the applicants based on a variety of criteria, and applicants can object against others' claims to a particular top-level domain. Regardless, it'll be another 9 to 20 months before ICANN's evaluation process completes, so it'll be a little bit before we find out how this all plays out.

Sony may sell its fancy New York City skyscraper

Image of Sony may sell its fancy New York City skyscraper
Sony's got a pretty swanky skyscraper in Manhattan. That skyscraper, however, may not feature Sony's logo much longer ' not to mention the employees it houses ' as the building is reportedly being considered for sale. The NY Post reports that Sony held talks with commercial real estate broker Newmark Grubb Knight Frank for the potential sale of the 55th and Madison-based, 37-story building.

Said talks apparently didn't conclude with a plan. A variety of potential outcomes are up in the air: renting out part of the building, selling the whole thing and leasing back part of it, and outright sale are all proposed in the piece.

"Sources familiar with the structure" valued the building at somewhere between $700 million and $1 billion, and Sony outright owns the structure ' that kind of capital infusion would significantly impact the ailing hardware manufacturer's bottom line. The company's fiscal 2012 results depict a grim reality for Sony, with even its Consumer Products & Services division (read: PlayStation) suffering losses.

IndieCade at E3: Sizing up Scale

Image of IndieCade at E3: Sizing up Scale
I also ran around the IndieCade tour at E3 this year, and while our own Jess Conditt took a lot of creepy pleasure in the grim philosophical horror title A Mother's Inferno, my tastes ran a little more simple and colorful: The best game I saw in that section of E3 this year was called Scale.

Scale, developed by Steve Swink (who teaches interactive design in Phoenix, but might be better known as Kyle Pulver's roommate?) is similar to Portal, which is a quality ascribed to a lot of great indie games these days. That's probably not too surprising, given that Portal was also an indie student project, before it got processed through Valve's chaotic engine of creativity. Scale is similar to Portal in that it too has a gun that doesn't kill, bit is instead used to manipulate a colorfully-rendered 3D world.

Portal, it could be said, played around with the functions of space, creating portals to bypass and bend it. Scale, on the other hand, is all about that stuff in between space. Namely: mass.

Like Portal, it also starts simple: There's a ledge in front of you, and a small rock that's not big enough to climb up the ledge. But you have a gun, and you presume the left mouse button shoots it, so fire away. The gun grows the rock up a size (complete with a bouncy inflating motion), and you can climb up the rock and onto the ledge in front of you, and on through a door to the next level.

That's the first stage. Later on, there's a house, but you can only grow it a few times before the gun runs out of power. The solution is to use the other mouse button to shrink the trees around you, and then pump that mass into the house, growing it up to full size, and then even further if you like. You can then go in, find a key, and move on.

And there's more. At one point I come across another ledge, with a collectible orb on top of it, and no clear way of getting up. But there's a sign below it, and sure enough, the gun also works on the sign. Pull mass off of objects around you, jump up on top of the sign, and grow it up to the top of the ledge.

I grin inwardly, with Swink standing behind me. I have broken his game: I have used his rules to get somewhere I wasn't supposed to be.

But of course he knows. "Oh, you did the sign thing," he says. "That's one way to do it. There are a few others."

The game's far from done, but Swink says he hopes to be at IndieCade later on this year. The game's made in Unity 3D, so Mac and PC are probably the first platforms he'll aim for. And as for a release date, he shrugs. He says it'll be out eventually, but you get the impression that he's making this game for him, not for us, really.

Finally, Swink shows me a later level, something that shows off what he's been thinking about during development. It's a desert level, with a big Grand Canyon gap running through it. "You can't get across the gap, see?" he says, showing that it's far too wide to jump across. And then he lowers the gun and shoots downward.

The camera suddenly jumps upward and hovers, like he's turned on God Mode and is about to fly around. He shoots down a few more times, and the camera zooms up farther, putting the whole level on the screen, with the gap far below. The weird change in perspective is puzzling.

And then I slowly realize what's going on. The world itself is shrinking, with the player staying the same height. The gap is now a small ditch at your feet. The mind bends into a new place. Just like Portal.

"Now you can jump the gap," says Swink with another shrug, and then makes the jump, a few times back and forth. "Anyway, it's something I'm working on."

Wii U achievements not mandatory for devs, friend codes to change for the better

Slant Six hit with layoffs post-Raccoon City

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City developer Slant Six has been hit by layoffs, cutting a quarter of its staff. GameSpot reports the Vancouver-based studio of 96 employees gave a fourth of the team the option to take a severance package or accept a temporary layoff, while it attempts to pick up projects. If the temporarily laid off aren't rehired in 13 weeks the unemployment becomes permanent.

"We must stress that these are temporary layoffs, which means we are working very hard on new business prospects so we can reinstate every single person affected," a company statement reads. "As an independent and close-knit studio it is a very difficult but necessary business measure due to the current project cycle demands."

The developer is currently working on two projects, one of them is a contract with a "major publisher," and the other is its first self-published title, Strata Scavenger, a downloadable post-apocalyptic flight simulation for PC and consoles.

Hands on: Nyko Free Fighter arcade stick (plus bonus Nyko booth gadgets)

During E3, contributing editor Jess Conditt and I met up with the folks at Nyko to take a look at the Free Fighter, the company's first real foray into the world of high-end arcade sticks. The Free Fighter's main selling point, beyond its Sanwa Denshi parts -- well, mostly Sanwa Denshi, as half the button plungers are in-house -- and programmable macros, is its modular design, which allows the joystick to be placed on either the left or right side of the buttons, or even be detached all together. Ambidextrous arcade sticks have been done before, but Nyko's offering is a bit more elegant than Qanba's solution.

That being said, the Free Fighter isn't necessarily the prettiest arcade stick I've ever seen, but it is certainly striking in an angular, industrial way. The lack of surface area isn't as much of an issue as it originally seemed like it would be, and resting my hands on the stick felt comfortable, be it on a table or in my lap. Nyko says the stick's small footprint was designed with portability in mind, so as to make the stick easier to transport from event to event.

Launching for the PS3 this holiday at a $180 price point, the Free Fighter is $30 more expensive than its strongest competition, the Mad Catz Round 2 Tournament Edition FightStick, which also uses Sanwa Denshi parts. Nyko told us that if successful, the Free Fighter could be adapted into a platform for other peripheral modules, like a flight stick or racing wheel. Xbox 360 and Wii U versions are expected to launch sometime next year.

Check out our awkward hands-on video above, as well as pictures of the Free Fighter and Nyko's other E3 offerings (Power Grip for Vita, Power Grip Pro for 3DS, Powerpad and Powerpad Pro for Android) in the gallery below.

Maxime Beland on the ghosts and panthers of Splinter Cell: Blacklist

Image of Maxime Beland on the ghosts and panthers of Splinter Cell: Blacklist

Description

Sam is back in his tactical suit and goggles, and he's more deadly than ever. He is the only secret operative with the power to act above the law, and uses ruthless methods to interrogate enemies in order to extract crucial information that will prevent the next Blacklist attack

Co-opinion: XCOM: Enemy Unknown

I thought the interface in combat worked great. Out of combat, it's all about the mood. Firaxis has given you something called "the anthill" for your command center, portrayed from a Wes Anderson-style sideview, with little scientists and soldiers all running around doing your bidding.

You can set orders and start missions from a central hub, and then from there you can grow out your operations into research (powered by resources earned during missions), and even a bar in the basement, complete with memorials to fallen team members. It's all targeted to make you believe the game's central premise: That you're in charge, your decisions have meaning, and the way you as commander (you, on the couch there, not an avatar) run XCOM can make or break the entire world.

David Jaffe aims to create a free-to-play shooter

Image of David Jaffe aims to create a free-to-play shooter
God of War and Twisted Metal designer David Jaffe talked about plans to create a free-to-play, browser-based shooter in an interview with GamesIndustry.biz. The game concept is one of many that seemed to have stuck with Jaffe since he left Eat Sleep Play in February. "I hate free-to-play but I love aspects of it. I love the instant-on, I love the low to no barrier of entry to get all kinds of people to jump in and play," Jaffe said.

"You don't have to sit there and power up your fucking machine and go through legal screens and load screens and load the game," Jaffe said. "I know that sounds kind of petty but when you think of all the distractions and fragmentation of entertainment today, for me that's kind of a pain. I'll choose to do other things rather than sit down and load up a triple-A game unless it's super, super special."

Jaffe is in the process of building concept art and forming a team of like-minded individuals, all with the goal of creating a free-to-play game that is "genuinely for gamers."

"You can listen to developers all day long tell you it's not pay to win, but you know, it kind of is pay to win. I'm not saying they're evil or they're lying - but one of the things they like to say is pay with your time or pay with your money. Well both of those are really shitty."

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup is its own game mode

Lately, I've been subjecting myself to cruel amounts of Tetris on Game Boy. The 1989 classic certainly isn't the best version of the game. Unlike later iterations, pushing up on the d-pad doesn't auto-drop tetrominos, there's no "hold piece" function, and there's an apparent lack of flexibility in rotating pieces in tight spaces.

None of that matters though, because the Game Boy version of Tetris holds a special place in my heart, primarily due to the way I play the game. After selecting Type A music (this is crucial), I often pick a starting level between five and eight, then stack blocks erratically until they fill a little over half the screen. After taking a moment to allow a wave of stress and anxiety to wash over me, I get to work, diving block-first into the mess I just created until I'm either taken under the current or I clear every line away. This is all despite the fact that the game's second play mode accomplishes this for me; it's more satisfying when I clean up my own mess.

Modern "AAA" games don't always leave room for this kind of play style. Collecting hundreds of trivial feathers or solving every side-quest possible fills that gap in our minds that screams "clean this mess up" because it is given directly to players as achievable goals. Still, nothing ages well like your own imagination. Bringing your imagination to a favorite video game can make that experience better.

I encourage you to check out last week's imaginative webcomics, and then vote for your favorite after the break.

Dante's rebellion fights on in a new, familiar world with DmC

This new iteration in the Devil May Cry franchise is truly "new" in a variety of ways: Capcom handed over complete stylistic control to Ninja Theory, the UK development studio responsible for Enslaved, who proceeded to chop off Dante's hair, dye it brown and drop him in the middle of a contemporary setting named Limbo City.

Ninja Theory's task is to make the new Devil May Cry accessible to new players and those who "may have abandoned" the franchise, chief designer Tameem Antoniades said at an E3 demo of DmC. If "fast-paced, demonic action with giant swords and guns" is "accessible," then Ninja Theory has nailed its market.

Not everything about DmC is a brazen departure from its roots. The world may be more colorful, but it is still Dante's world, and he owns it with the same wit and flair of his predecessors. The heart of Devil May Cry lies in action, and DmC features plenty of moments for brutal, multi-weapon attacks and quick strategy to uphold this legacy.

The extended demo has Dante run an obstacle course constructed by Lilith, the ruler of all demons in Limbo City. The course itself is one of the more obvious attempts to modernize the series, as it's a parody of reality television contests, which Lilith calls "The Devil Has Talent." Dante runs through several stages, with "Round 1! Fight!" announcements introducing each battle, and hilariously altered catch phrases from shows such as America's Next Top Model being sprinkled throughout Lilith's taunts.

Dante uses his classic human sword, Rebellion, along with the angel scythe Osiris, and Arbiter the demon axe. He also relies on his trusted firearms, Ebony and Ivory, to fight off The Rage, fire demonsand ice demons, among a few others. Fire demons can only be destroyed with demon attacks, ice demons only with angel attacks, and The Rage is a pair of beasts that become enraged when one partner is killed.

The strategy behind killing each brand of enemy is the crux of DmC's intrigue as a character-action title, and Ninja Theory made sure to focus on that aspect ' not necessarily making the game "hard," but creating challenging, engaging battles and including a variety of enemies.

When Dante activates Devil Trigger mode his hair turns white and he takes on the face of a demon, lending him more power and speed while restoring his health. The white hair isn't a thowback to classic Dante's appearance, but it does hold some significance, Antoniades said.

"These are the early formative years for Dante," he said. "It has a story point that leads somewhere else later on in the game."

Antoniades promised, without revealing who exactly would show up, that DmC will feature a cast of classic franchise characters, all stylized to fit the new title's world. Alex Garland, who wrote the screenplays for 28 Days Later and Sunshine, is a consulting writer on DmC's story, so expect those new characters to be literally reborn, or really, really tan.

DmC is slated to launch on January 15, 2013 for consoles, and will hit "soon after" for PC. Ninja Theory is still working on porting the console build to PC and configuring the controls, Antoniades said. The title has been delayed once, and for good reason, as Antoniades opened the demo with a warning: "The cut-scenes are unfinished."

Capcom had previously expressed plans to release a new Devil May Cry game every 2.5 years, but for now, Antoniades said, Ninja Theory isn't even thinking about a sequel. DmC will, of course, have DLC post-launch.

DLC in this day and age? How rebellious.

E3 2012's secret trend: crowd-control strategy

Check out Razer's Mechwarrior Online 'Artemis' prototype and other peripherals

Razer's E3 booth was fully stocked with both retail and prototype peripherals this year, the most interesting of which was the Artemis, an experimental controller array designed specifically for MechWarrior Online. The prototype, designed and built in a month, features a flight stick on the right, an array of buttons on the left and a 10 inch screen in the middle. Razer hopes to have a retail version of the peripheral ready sometime this year.

The rest of the booth was populated by the company's ambidextrous, 8200 dpi Taipan mouse ($79.99, July), a Battlefield 3-branded, helicopter-style Blackshark headset ($129.99, July) and the Blade laptop, all of which can be seen in the gallery below.

Dead Space 3: co-op meets Carver

Image of Dead Space 3: co-op meets Carver
The majority of Dead Space 3 takes place on a frigid planet that seemingly hides a secret ' and plenty of necromorphs.

After Isaac's ship crashes on Tau Volantis, he emerges from the wreckage covered in blood, limping through knee-deep snow and a blinding snow storm. Necromorph enemies emerge from beneath the snow's cover when you least expect it, evoking the same tension we first felt in the corridors of the Ishimura.

Dead Space 3 aims to throw a lot of new things at you beyond that sense of dread over what's around the next dark corner. You can invite a friend into the game at any time, and upon reaching the next checkpoint or reverting back to the last one, Isaac Clarke is joined by John Carver. He's a foul-mouthed, hostile man with a scarred face and little love for Necromorph disposal.

The game changes depending on whether you're playing through the campaign alone or with a friend. Characters change locations and events play out differently, evidenced during my lengthy behind-closed-doors preview session here at E3. Approaching a massive industrial complex, Isaac spies his buddy Carver up on a piece of scaffolding. Carver yells down to Clarke, before he's attacked suddenly by a group of Necromorphs. He opens fire but soon has to withdraw, leaving Isaac to deal with a massive cicada-esque monster below.

Should you play in co-op mode, though, Carver and Clarke are together at the start of the scene. Their little exchange doesn't happen and the two take on the cicadamorph together. EA is billing it as two different campaigns in one, though the changes ' at least seen here ' come off as a neat bit of fan service, more than anything that actually alters the events of the game. However, taking on a boss monster with a friend at your side definitely changes the balance of the battle.

Dead Space 3 also introduces human enemies for the first time, and Necromorphs who try their best to wield assault rifles. There's a moment when a Necromorph possesses a dead soldier and tried to shoot Isaac with a gun, but its feeble monster brain can't grasp the concept of aiming. Instead, the Necromorph ends up spraying from the hip in clumsy fashion.

It's a decidedly awkward scenario that I think detracts from the core Dead Space experience. Unitology soldiers want Clarke and Carver dead; Necromorphs have no problem possessing the dead Unitology soldiers and pursuing their failed goal. While the shifting alliances in these sudden three-way skirmishes are interesting, these more action-heavy moments are the exact opposite of what I value and look for in the Dead Space series.

Later on, Clark and Carver descend into a mining facility and become trapped in an arena with a giant, spinning top-like drill. It's a major co-op moment where the two must defend against swarms of Necromorphs and warn each other of the drill's location as it slides around in the room. The two must hit the drill with stasis and, upon slowing it down, shoot the fuel pods inside to ultimately destroy it. There's a lot to juggle here, and results in a tense encounter.

The moments where Isaac is alone and scouring the ice planet resonated the most with me. I felt unease while walking across the frigid surface of Tau Volantis ' a feeling Visceral Games has gotten very good at capturing and conveying. Let's just hope those moments ultimately outnumber the ones in which you're shooting human enemies.

Dead Space 3 launches in February 2013 for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.
